Gurinder Chadha has explained that for years there wasn’t a strong enough story to justify a sequel to Bend It Like Beckham, but that has changed. “About a month ago I came up with a powerful story. Now I have something to tell,” she said in an interview with Deadline.
The original film, released in 2002, became a landmark in British cinema and had a significant impact, especially within the South Asian community in the UK. For many, it marked a turning point in the representation of women’s football on screen.
Her intention is to bring back the main characters, although everything will depend on the script. The original Bend It Like Beckham cast included Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley and Juliet Stevenson. The aim is to release the sequel in 2027, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original launch.
Chadha emphasises that the current context of women’s football — now more competitive and global — makes it relevant to revisit this story now.
