The news was confirmed this morning by his family through a statement on social media: “With indescribable sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Ozzy Osbourne this morning. He was with his family, surrounded by much love.” The note, signed by Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis, ends with a request for privacy.

Osbourne gave his last concert a few weeks ago in Birmingham, his hometown. On stage, he was joined by the original members of Black Sabbath: Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. It was the band’s first joint performance in two decades.

Black Sabbath was formed in 1968. Two years later, the group released their self-titled debut album, which marked a turning point in the history of heavy metal. Osbourne was dismissed in 1979. From then on, he continued his solo career, this time with Sharon Arden, his wife, as his manager.

In 1996, they created the Ozzfest festival, with the aim of giving a platform to new artists in the genre. Years later, the entire family became media figures thanks to the MTV reality show The Osbournes.

Both in his solo work and with Black Sabbath, his music continued to circulate beyond retirement. Osbourne did not release new material, but his public and artistic presence never fully disappeared.
