It’s becoming increasingly popular for psychologists to use hypnosis as a tool for a multitude of problems such as anxiety. There are many definitions of hypnosis. But we can summarise it as a state of suggestibility that is produced through induction.
It’s true that the number of people whose anxiety decreases thanks to hypnosis continues to increase. And also the number of professionals who are trained. The first is that hypnosis has gained scientific legitimacy. For a long time it was considered a mysterious, even occult practice. Today, with the development of neuroscience and medical imaging, we have a better understanding of its effectiveness. In addition, it is now performed in medical centres for anaesthesia.
In the last 20 years, there has been a boom in personal development techniques, particularly meditation, similar to hypnosis, which has moved away from its original spiritual connotations. The combination of different hypnosis techniques is interesting to free ourselves from very old traumas, phobias, addictions, persistent anxieties, also for the mental preparation of high level sportsmen’, explains Anthony Laroche, master in Ericksonian hypnosis, NLP and hypno-coaching.
It is said that 90% of our global functioning is managed by unconscious processes. When we have a recurring problem, a negative pattern, a blockage, it is often programmed at the unconscious level,’ says Margot Sitruk, a practitioner of Ericksonian hypnosis. With hypnosis you access your deepest resources and new levels of awareness. The results are much faster than with psychotherapy because you have direct access to the unconscious and all the information stored there.
How does it work?
We all have an ordinary state of consciousness, which varies throughout the day from daydreaming to ultra-concentration. But there are other states of consciousness that are difficult for us to access voluntarily,’ explains Kevin Finel, founder of Arca, Europe’s leading hypnosis school, and co-founder of the website Le Psychonaute.
“If we crave sugar, for example, we will eat it even if we know we will feel guilty afterwards. Under hypnosis, we can get to the root of this compulsion in order to change it. You can work on the right place immediately and free yourself from the imprint you may have had in the past that is causing this behaviour’.
Is it for everyone?
Everyone can do it, because everyone has a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. And because hypnosis is a natural state of the brain that everyone experiences on a daily basis. But it is said that 30% of people are particularly sensitive to it.
Why is this? There are many factors that enhance receptivity, such as your level of open-mindedness, your ability to let go, your level of personal development, the state of mind you are in on the day of the session, the quality of the relationship established with the practitioner’.
