Carín León brings one of the most important years of his career to a close with the release of Chapayeka. The album was recorded entirely live and outdoors in Hermosillo, Sonora. The project is now available on all digital platforms and reaffirms the artist’s deep connection to his homeland, his history and his cultural roots.
Hermosillo as a starting point
As with previous projects, the singer chose his hometown as the setting. This time, the recording took place in the historic neighbourhood of La Matanza, one of the oldest areas in Hermosillo. The location holds personal significance for Carín León, as his grandparents once lived there and its streets form part of his personal memory.
The production was recorded next to the tree where his grandfather used to sing. This detail turned the album into an intimate tribute that links music with family history and Sonoran identity.
A fully live-recorded album
Chapayeka was recorded entirely live, featuring six musicians and 15 guest artists. Among them are key figures from norteño and regional Mexican music such as Indio Ortega, Lalo Mora and Eliseo Robles (Palomazo Norteño), Óscar Iván Treviño (Duelo), El Larry y La Clase, Tony Aguirre, Cheche Flores, Código FN, Los Alegres de la Sierra, Nivel C, Dueto Sensación, La Casta, Braulio Mata and Changoleón, among others.
The album was produced by Antonio Zepeda.
Chapayeka
The album’s title is inspired by Yaqui culture, native to the state of Sonora. Chapayecas are central figures in Cuaresma celebrations and symbolise the defence of the community, its roots and its spiritual connection with nature.
The album includes 20 tracks, all reinterpretations of iconic songs from traditional Mexican music. The lead track is “Sin Fortuna”, performed alongside Indio Ortega. This song sets the tone for the project, rooted in respect for tradition through a contemporary lens.
With this title, Carín León reaffirms his commitment to his origins and to the customs that have shaped his artistic and personal identity.
A defining year in his career
Chapayeka arrives after a historic year for Carín León. During this period, he won his fourth Latin GRAMMY®, received his second GRAMMY® nomination — including his first win — and announced a historic run of sold-out concerts at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
He also took part in international collaborations such as “We Made It Look Easy / Hicimos Que Pareciera Fácil” with Bon Jovi, “VELAS” with Carlos Santana and “Lost in Translation” with Kacey Musgraves, a track included in Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 best songs of the year.
With Chapayeka, Carín León not only brings an exceptional year to a close, but also places Sonora back at the centre of his artistic narrative, consolidating his position as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Mexican music.
