Carlota Barrera SS24: giving voice to craftsmanship

In her new collection “GENERATIONAL RELAY”, Carlota Barrera highlights Spanish craftsmanship and crafts that are being lost.

Carlota Barrera SS24: giving voice to craftsmanship

After her return to Spain, Carlota Barrera embarks on a journey back to her place of origin and makes her SS24 a meeting place for designers, artisans, dressmakers, patternmakers, seamstresses and tailors. The designer seeks from this dialogue between industry professionals, how to make disciplines coexist and promote training and the transfer of knowledge to future generations.

In this journey to the decade of the 90’s, marked by extremes, contradictions and the renewal of codes and social standards, this collection is based on the thoughts of reflection and freedom that characterized that era. Street, asphalt and a mix of cultural, musical and urban influences such as Patti Smith or Kurt Cobain, give rise to pieces that speak of creative freedom, authenticity and fluidity.

Tailoring, a distinctive element of Carlota Barrera, is approached from a new perspective: layering. Versatile and easy-to-wear pieces create a double play on the human eye, blurring the boundaries between what is and what seems: a trompe l’oeil. Likewise, the experimentation with denim continues and Carlota Barrera’s cut out adapts to the new concept of rebellion, reaffirming itself as a sign of identity. The designer surprises by adding a fuchsia pink for the first time to her proposal, which brings freshness to a collection in mainly neutral colors.

In addition, the brand collaborates with Ábatte, a company that works with natural fibers in an old monastery in Segovia. Carlota Barrera designs a shirt, a unique limited edition piece, made with silk fabric hand-spun on her traditional loom. Likewise, Estaños de Pedraza, the last tin workshop in Spain, collaborates by making pieces such as accessories and appliqués for denim, with the aim of paying tribute to a trade with a long history that is about to disappear.

At a time when immediacy, the pressure of the catwalks and the increase of consumption are suffocating, Carlota Barrera raises the beauty and value of handmade work. Thus arises the need to show the process and production time of traditional Spanish craftsmanship and its vital importance for emerging designers, industry and cultural heritage. To this end, the designer, with the support of the Madrid City Council and after winning the Madrid Fashion Capital 2022 award, joins Querida and the production company Mañana, creating a film directed by Guillem Cruells that amplifies the voices of the professionals who are part of the brand while documenting the production process of the collection.

In short, Carlota Barrera SS24 initiates a debate that aims to be part of a new culture that maintains and perpetuates the importance of tradition and the heritage of the trade, so that we can all learn from the past and project ourselves into a new future.
