Charli XCX is about to break the big screen in the most punk way possible. The queen of hyperpop and digital chaos is teaming up with legendary Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike—yes, the same man responsible for the aesthetic traumas of Audition and Ichi the Killer—to star in and produce her new film. A collaboration that reeks of blood, neon, and distortion.
Although the project is still shrouded in secrecy, we know that Miike hasn’t lost his taste for the extreme. And if we add Charli to the mix—who has recently turned to heavyweight indie films and surreal productions—the result promises to be a visual bombshell with an instant cult following. The script will be written by Ross Evans, which makes it clear that this isn’t a typical Hollywood production.
2025 is looking hyperactive for Charli: in addition to this project with Miike, we’ll see her in The Moment (directed by Aidan Zamiri), Julia Jackman’s queer fantasy 100 Nights of Hero (alongside Nicholas Galitzine and Emma Corrin), Pete Ohs and Jeremy O. Harris’ Erupcja, and Daniel Goldhaber’s provocative remake of Faces of Death. Also coming up are I Want Your Sex (yes, with Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman), Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice, The Gallerist with Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega… The list goes on.
For his part, Miike remains the enfant terrible of Asian cinema: with more than 100 films directed, the creator of Dead or Alive and Visitor Q will premiere Sham at Tribeca, while also cooking up this new gem alongside Charli. Still untitled and unsynopsis-free, but with all the ingredients to blow our minds.
