The Berlin-based DJ and artist from Granada, Pablo Cobo, aka Chico Blanco, presents the details of his debut album, AMNESIA, which will be released on July 15 through his collective, Mareo.
After making a name for himself with a series of club-pop singles and EPs that connected with a new generation of house and dancefloor lovers, Chico Blanco condenses his most expansive imagery into AMNESIA: a collection of nostalgic dance hits conceived between Berlin, the memory of an imagined Ibiza, and a deeply Mediterranean sensibility. The album understands a night by the sea as a succession of states: euphoria, strangeness, the comedown, recovery, oblivion, and that desire to disappear for a while.
Along with the album announcement comes his new single, “Baila.” In Blanco’s own words, “it talks about that moment when your body and mind start talking to you and you can’t resist the urge to go out and dance.” Inspired by the Valencian new beat of the late 80s, with echoes of Locomía and the classic spirit of 90s New York hip house, Blanco builds a love letter to a seemingly simpler era.
Regarding the album as a whole, Blanco explains: “For me, AMNESIA is a dance-pop fantasy suspended between memory and imagination. Each song works as a portal to a place forgotten in time, whether real or fictional. There is something about romanticizing places and moments you never actually lived that works as a form of escape; a reaction to living in a reality where we can choose between almost infinite possibilities, to the point that such freedom ends up being paralyzing.”
More than a stylistic shift, AMNESIA consolidates a vision: a freer, more human, and less codified way of understanding club music. The exuberant nature of the record connects with the open and uninhibited Berlin queer scene, of which Blanco is an active part. This vision has also been refined outside the studio, both on stage and through his residency on NTS, where he has continued to shape an increasingly recognizable sonic identity and a very personal relationship with the dancefloor and club imagery.
