To mark its 100th anniversary, Disney is launching #DisneyCreate100, a celebration of 100 years of creativity and storytelling. To do so, Swarovski has recreated Cinderella’s iconic glass slipper.
2023 is a historic year for Disney, the house of Mickey Mouse celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, a milestone with which it has conquered different generations alike thanks to its stories, which have now become classics. To commemorate this anniversary, Disney has taken the opportunity to collaborate with artists and brands with various actions as part of its “Create 100” campaign, including Swarovski.
The aim of this collaboration is to donate the 100 unique creations, created by top international talents, to raise funds for the US foundation “Make-A-Wish”. The first piece of this initiative was an almost two-metre sculpture of the company’s most iconic character, Mickey Mouse, created by Virgil Abloh Securities.
Now, Swarovski and Disney have teamed up to create Cinderella’s iconic crystal shoes. Swarovski creative director Giovanna Engelbert has made an exact replica of the “world’s most famous shoe”. The heel is made up of 221 facets and a golden butterfly and has been worked on by 8 specialised professionals over 150 hours at the jewellery brand’s headquarters.
“What inspired me to recreate Cinderella’s iconic glass slipper for Disney’s 100th anniversary was the name of the foundation, and the idea of a dream,” says Engelbert. She adds that “the shoe is the most famous shoe in the world. It’s transformative and full of magic, so it was the perfect way to bring the world of Swarovski and the world of Disney together”.
In addition, as part of this collaboration, Swarovski and Disney have launched a special collection of crystal figurines of Mickey, Minnie and Donald with the jewellery brand’s Aurora Borealis overlay, as well as themed pendants and earrings, which are adorned with cut crystals, representing the magic of Disney.
