Meet Plastic Collectors, the NGO that works with GAP and GOA ORGANICS

Meet Plastic Collectors, a non-profit organisation that organises the collection of plastics from beaches and forests.

Plastic Collectors is a non-profit association that organises plastic collections on beaches and in forests, with the aim of raising awareness and involving society in the change they are looking for in the world. This young NGO has already collaborated with companies such as GAP and GOA ORGANICS.

Plastic Collectors is not only an association, but also a place of social inclusion, where a vulnerable group can feel part of this project. Through donations, they hire socially excluded people for the collections, called collectors, thus closing the circle of socio-environmental aid.

During the two years since its creation, they have collaborated with several foundations and have created new formats that adapt to Covid-19’s current situation, such as the “Plastic Talks”, a space in which debates and talks on sustainability are held with organisations and professionals from the sector.

Among its collaborations, the launch of a hydroalcoholic gel by the vegan and sustainable cosmetics brand @GoaOrganics stands out, in which part of the profits were donated to the association to be able to carry out the programmed activities. They have also organised several collections on the beaches of Barcelona with brands such as @Gap and @BrownieSpain.

Its founders, Mar and Guille, are passionate about the sea and one of their main concerns is the impact of human beings on their own lives, the environment and animals. Thanks to all these actions they have organised and all the money raised, they have been able to hire 63 collectors and have the help of more than 200 volunteers for the collections.

The collectors are one of the main pillars of the association. To organise each collection, they have several sources of funding, such as their sustainable clothing collection, external collaborators and donations received through the Gofundme platform. A few days before the activity and with all the money raised, they decide how many people in social exclusion to recruit.

One of the most important pillars of Plastic Collectors are the collections, which are carried out both on beaches and in forests. With these activities, what they try to achieve is that society can become aware first hand, seeing with their own eyes the dirt that is in the environment and also create synergies between volunteers and collectors.

The aim is to carry out a monthly collection, as well as private collections for those companies that want to implement this activity in their team building programme. At the moment, all these collections are organised in Barcelona, but they are starting an expansion project, looking for several profiles distributed throughout Spain who can act as ambassadors in their cities.

The idea in the medium/long term is to create a much larger community in which each ambassador can organise the collections and thus turn Plastic Collectors into a platform for training and awareness-raising at school and business level. In addition, one of the activities they want to launch is to rent a boat and go out to sea with volunteers and collectors.
