DJ/producer, label boss and creative director Cora Novoa will make her debut on Berlin’s Second State label with the EP “Rituals”. The release contains 3 original and dynamic tracks by the Spanish creative, with an additional version by Berghain DJ regular Nur Jaber.
Opening with the title track, “Rituals”, Cora sets the pace for the EP with a throbbing kick drum and bass combo, even hand claps and a hazy synth that lends a dark atmosphere. A recurring, frenetic vocal is introduced that throws all stability to the wind and drives the percussion into a frenzy.
Industrial elements and cluttered sounds groan and ring out as the track develops, adding to the darkness Novoa has initially created. The following track, “Old Anthems”, is preceded by a bubbling electric riff and a repetitive, chopped up sample that echoes along with the percussion. Glitchy percussion and distortions are present throughout, adding personality to this trance-inducing track.
“I’m Gonna Kill You King Romano” is the shortest cut on the EP, but has the same impact. The sound production mimics that of polyphonic choral music, with Cora using multiple samples and effects. The vocals are layered over soft pads and modest twinkling synths to create an ethereal moment in this hard-hitting EP.
Nur Jaber’s remix brings with it a sharper kick and a change in the samples, now with a deep, muffled male vocal. The trance-like synths have made their presence felt, but in moderation. Nur’s interpretation adds a lightness to the original, playing with the arrangements and creating a new undulating melody and distorted rave sound.
We talk w/ Cora Novoa (SKTVT) for the release of ‘The Hive’, her next EP.
