There is a trend that has been dominating social media for several seasons now, with flowing fabrics and country settings. It’s called Cottagecore and we think it’s set to take over our summer.
A quiet and stress-free life, in the countryside and in contact with nature, enjoying a more rural lifestyle, is what could define this lifestyle, now turned into a fashion trend and, of course, with TikTok as the driving force behind its success and dissemination, as well as the collections of brands such as Miu Miu to corroborate it. Only by knowing this lifestyle can you have a slight idea of what this trend is going to consist of, where the country aesthetic takes over summer outfits.
The term Cottagecore comes from ‘cottage’, which means cabin and the suffix ‘core’ derived from 1980s hardcore punk and is now used to delimit a category. It started around 2017 on Tumblr with some photographs and, as we have already mentioned, migrated to Instagram and TikTok. What characterises this trend is the representation of nostalgia that evokes a life in the countryside and extols manual processes, as well as being more in touch with nature and the cycles of the land.
To speak of ‘cottagecore’ is to speak of floral prints or vichy checks, natural and flowing fabrics, peasant-style silhouettes, light tones inspired by nature. From puffed sleeves to sharp waists that transport you to the bucolic atmosphere of life in the countryside. The ‘cottagecore’ trend is also complemented by footwear and accessories made from natural materials, generally raffia and esparto grass in espadrilles, bags, baskets and even earrings.
