The family of D’Angelo released a statement announcing that “the shining star of our family has dimmed his light in this life… after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.” The artist had reportedly been hospitalised for several months and spent two weeks in palliative care before passing away.

A Life Devoted to Art

Born on 11 February 1974 in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo grew up deeply influenced by church music. It was there that he developed his connection to the piano and to the spiritual sound that would define his career.

His debut album, Brown Sugar (1995), catapulted him to recognition, earning multiple Grammy nominations and positioning him as one of the pillars of the neo-soul movement.

His second album, Voodoo (2000), had a huge impact, featuring hits such as “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, which became a cultural landmark.

After a long period away from the public eye, he returned in 2014 with Black Messiah, an album widely praised for its lyrical depth and social commitment.

An Enduring Legacy

Throughout his life, D’Angelo won four Grammy Awards and received 14 nominations in total. His three studio albums — Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah — are regarded as highly influential works. Each of them distinguished by artistic integrity and a seamless blend of soul, funk, jazz, and modern R&B.

At the time of his death, he was reportedly working on a fourth album with Raphael Saadiq, which could be released posthumously. D’Angelo is survived by his three children: Michael Archer Jr. — born from his relationship with fellow singer Angie Stone — and two others, Imani and Morroco. His longtime partner, Angie Stone, also passed away in March 2025, just seven months earlier.
