Dario Vitale bids farewell to Versace after a single season

Dario Vitale leaves Versace after just one season, marking a pivotal moment as the house enters a new chapter under the Prada Group.

Versace has confirmed the departure of its creative director, Dario Vitale, barely nine months after his arrival. The announcement comes following the brand’s official acquisition by the Prada Group, a deal worth 1.25 billion dollars. Vitale will step down on 12 December.

In a statement, the house expressed its thanks for the designer’s “extraordinary contribution” during this period of transition. His sole runway show, presented in September for Spring/Summer 2026, was one of the most talked-about of the season.

The departure of the Neapolitan designer, formerly design director at Miu Miu, had already been rumoured. His appointment in March made him the first creative figure outside the Versace family to take the reins after Donatella, who remains the brand’s global ambassador. His arrival coincided with the first reports of a potential sale and raised questions about the creative direction the house might take under its new owner.

Although his tenure has been brief, Vitale’s vision helped strengthen the brand’s positioning within the luxury sector. His approach relied on a higher price range, a strategy several analysts had considered essential for revitalising the house.

Now, with a new executive direction led by CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger and the appointment of a new creative director still pending, Versace enters its most significant period of change since the death of Gianni Versace in 1997. The house states that the next creative lead will be announced “in due course”. Until then, the team will work under internal supervision.
