Belgian designer Marina Yee, a member of the collective The Antwerp Six who revolutionised fashion in the 1980s, has died at the age of 67 from cancer, according to the ModeMuseum in Antwerp (MoMu).
“Marina Yee’s name is inextricably linked to the legendary collective of the Antwerp Six, who put Belgian fashion on the world map,” the museum said in a statement.
The Antwerp Six
In 1986, six young Flemish designers — Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Van Saene, Marina Yee, Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Bikkembergs — graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. That same year, they took their creations to London to present them at the British Designer Show. As their names proved difficult to pronounce outside Belgium, they soon became known as The Antwerp Six.
Their work — austere, raw and deconstructed — stood in stark contrast to the dominant aesthetic of the 1980s, defined by sequins and shoulder pads. Over time, each of them followed a different path. Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester achieved international success. While Marina Yee maintained a more discreet profile, developing her work outside the mainstream fashion system.
The ModeMuseum in Antwerp plans to dedicate an exhibition to The Antwerp Six in 2026, marking the 40th anniversary of their international debut.
