Since 2011, Desigual’s relationship with Monsieur Christian Lacroix has been much more than a mere collaboration: it is a story of friendship, respect and love. Season after season, their designs become undisputed bestsellers.
For this Autumn Winter 2023, the couturier proposes, through his evocative prints, an imaginary journey to abstract landscapes. The collection, with dresses as the main protagonists, juxtaposes digital collage, fractal distortions, impossible zooms and games of micro-macro scales.
The campaign, shot by Txema Yeste, and with Julia Banas as talent, recreates a horizon between lunar and terrestrial, a light between sunset and sunrise, which transports us to that stylised environment imagined by Monsieur Christian Lacroix, where the prints express themselves in a sweeping way.
“My aim with these designs is to create a world that is special and different… A place to constantly escape to on an imaginary journey through time and space. If there is a Heaven, I imagine it as a machine that would allow us to transcend those limits,” says Monsieur Christian Lacroix.
Passionate about digital collage, the designer confesses to being addicted to creating prints with this technique. “I love to distort it into something abstract and full of details, something where we can perceive every atom, as if we were zooming in on a mineral or on the wings of a butterfly, as if we were entering the tiniest pixel and it becomes in itself another universe. “I’m fascinated by everything digital: if I were 20 years old today, I’d be creating video games”.
The looks, in detail
In the collection, the prints are grouped into two distinct ranges. The first, on a black background, plays with fluorescent colours – pinks and greens – and blue, red and amber notes. The motifs mix flowers and their silhouettes with mineral textures and ink stains.
The second, with a palette of earth tones and acid accents, comes from the illustrated books and collections of photos and postcards that Lacroix himself treasures. Creating these motifs,” he explains, “is very much a child’s work, because they are literally old black and white snapshots that I have repainted in sulphurous colours. The prints mix landscapes, tapestries and even fantastic animals.
“I want to place us at a point between the extraordinary and the conventional, between the fantastic and the real; in a part of the world that borders on two contrasting universes. I want to take us to a place that I am in love with, so that the people who wear these clothes can travel there. That’s where the desire to go further in terms of colour, prints and design comes from.
This September, the new Fall Winter 2023 collection designed by Monsieur Christian Lacroix for Desigual arrives in shops around the world and at desigual.com.
