One of the must-see events of Paris Fashion Week was the Dior womenswear show for the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2023/2024 season. The Maison has made a retrospective exercise inspired by three great women to launch the best proposal for the new generations.
The new collection was once again designed by Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of the house’s women’s line since 2016. Chiuri continued with her discourse of giving visibility to iconic female figures who contribute to establishing a new universe of powerful references such as Catherine Dior, Édith Piaf and Juliette Gréco for the new generations.
Inspired by the Paris of the 1950s, and more especially by the legacy and clothing of these women; Catherine Dior was the sister of the designer and founder of the house; Édith Piaf was one of the most acclaimed French singers of the 20th century; and Juliette Gréco was an actress and singer who began her brilliant career in the early 1950s.
These were years that in themselves hold great significance for the Maison, being the years in which Dior began its journey as an independent brand and the unique style it created called the “New Look”. A universe that Maria Grazia Chiuri wanted to reinterpret, fusing it with the spirit and aesthetics of Catherine Dior, Édith Piaf and Juliette Gréco.
Chiuri presented a Dior FW23-24 that highlighted the purest Parisian style; toughened by the austerity of post-war times and a bit of military chic. The focus on dresses was the central theme of the collection which came with a sober, demure air and clean, straight lines. In addition, during the show we also saw new takes on the house’s classic prints, as well as masculinisation and updating of archival silhouettes.
