The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has decided to exclude Russian participants on the recommendation of the festival’s own governing body and based on the rules of the event and the values of the organisation.
The Eurovision Song Contest in Turin next May has cancelled Russia following the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. In a statement, the EBU explained that the change of position follows the recommendation of the governing body of the festival itself and is based on the rules of the event and the values of the European Broadcasting Union.
In addition, the organisation has consulted “extensively with its members”, according to its statement. Russia’s participation in the competition would “discredit the competition”. The text notes, however, that the EBU is an “apolitical” organisation whose broadcasters are “committed to upholding public service values” and that it “celebrates diversity through music” and “unites Europe on the same stage”.
