Everything you need to know about Charli XCX and George Daniel’s wedding

On Saturday, July 19, in the heart of Hackney, London, Charlotte Aitchison—artistically known as Charli XCX—and George Daniel, producer and drummer for The 1975, were married in a ceremony brimming with sensitivity, authenticity, and an aesthetic carefully detached from convention. The British artist, an emblem of new global pop, and her partner, a central figure in the sonic architecture of contemporary music, rewrote the script of the traditional wedding, opting for a visual and emotional language as elegant as it was rebellious.

Charli and George met in 2021 while creating the song “Spinning,” alongside No Rome and The 1975. Since then, their relationship has traversed both creative and emotional territories. In November 2023, they announced their engagement, and although the possibility of a wedding in Sicily was initially considered—even an opulent event with no time limits for the celebration—they ultimately opted for a more refined, emotional, and precise version.

Hackney Town Hall

Hackney Town Hall (London), with its Art Deco architecture and profoundly London-inspired institutional history, was the chosen setting for the wedding. It is a building with discreet symbolism yet full of resonance: the public becomes a space for the intimate; history becomes the support of a personal narrative. Far from the escapism of a Tuscan villa or the ostentation of island destinations, the couple opted for urban roots, proximity, and uncontrived sophistication.

A Vivienne Westwood Bride

The choice of dress was, as expected, a political and aesthetic gesture. Charli appeared in a bridal design by Vivienne Westwood, an undisputed symbol of critically conscious British fashion. The dress, with its asymmetrical lines and tight draping, eschewed orthodox classicism to embrace a distorted, sculptural romanticism. The above-the-knee cut and corset-inspired bodice defined a silhouette that speaks to both punk heritage and the most subtle glamour. She paired it with white slingbacks, providing a deliberately anti-solemn lightness.

The cigarette as a generational symbol

In a gesture charged with emotional realism and generational aesthetics, Charli was photographed smoking on the street, still veiled, alongside her husband. This image, which quickly became iconic, transcends the anecdotal to become a symbol of a new way of understanding the ceremony: less choreographed, more performative, honest, and deeply relatable. There is no pretense in the gesture, only the natural extension of a sensibility that finds beauty in the everyday.

From TikTok to the Altar

The intimate and reserved ceremony was presided over by family and close friends—including members of The 1975, though without the presence of vocalist Matty Healy. Although it was a private event, Charli chose to share carefully selected snippets via TikTok.

“When George doesn’t cry when he sees me walk down the aisle,” Charli wrote in one of the videos, later adding in the caption: “Luckily he did cry xx.” A wink of irony and vulnerability in equal measure, it encapsulates the energy of the event: intimate, with low-effort aesthetics that hide an impeccable attention to detail.

Rumor has it they could have another big wedding this summer, with many more guests and members of their circle. And everything points to the chosen setting being Italy, or at least that’s what The Sun newspaper claims (and the various allusions Charli herself has made to that country). Whether this is the only ceremony or just a glimpse of what’s to come, we’re left with the romantic message the British actress conveyed on The Howard Stern Show: “We just want to be together forever and celebrate at a party with our friends.”

Charli XCX stars in and produces Takashi Miike’s new film.
