“A comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment have officially unveiled their next major cinematic project: Digger. The film is directed by four-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu and stars Tom Cruise. Its worldwide release is scheduled for 2 October 2026, with sights firmly set on becoming one of the standout releases of the autumn.
The announcement came with a first poster and a teaser that have made waves across the industry. Known for intense and visually ambitious titles such as Birdman and The Revenant, Iñárritu is now venturing into new creative territory. Digger is described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions”. All signs point to a turn towards dark humour and satire, without losing the physical and emotional force that defines his filmmaking.
For Tom Cruise, this project marks a return to auteur cinema. Over the past decade, the actor has focused almost exclusively on major franchises such as Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. His collaboration with Iñárritu opens up a new phase centred on character-driven work and creative prestige, recalling the roles that shaped his early years in Hollywood.
For now, plot details remain tightly under wraps, as is typical of the director’s productions. Even so, the October release places Digger as a strong contender for the 2026–2027 awards season. It is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cinematic events of next year.
