Frida Kahlo’s Casa Roja reborn as a museum

A project that rescues and reinterprets the family home of the acclaimed artist.

Popularly known as Casa Roja, the building located in Mexico City has now been converted into a space that reveals a little-explored side of Frida: intimate, everyday, deeply human.

Far from the institutionalised narrative that revolves around her romance with Diego Rivera or the magnitude of her work, this museum, managed by the Kahlo Foundation, opens a direct door to the woman who existed behind the scenes. An emotional portrait that, until now, remained in the shadows between myths, colours and pain.

The Casa Roja was originally purchased by Frida‘s parents and remained in the family for decades. A refuge that accompanied her life from childhood to her final years and which, after a meticulous transformation process, is now breathing new life under a new approach.

The project was designed by Rockwell Group, with creative direction and graphic design by Pentagram and Ileen Gallagher, who have managed to maintain the domestic aura of the space while turning it into an immersive museum experience. Inside is an exceptional collection of personal items: handwritten letters, unpublished photographs, clothing and intimate pieces that help reconstruct the narrative of a Frida who rarely appears in art books.
