The ban is now a reality: glitter will be banned from October in the European Union.
In an effort to combat growing concerns about climate change, environmental pollution and microplastics, the European Commission has taken another step forward, announcing a ban that many will not be happy about. From 17 October 2023, glitter will be banned, as it is a microplastic smaller than 5mm in size.
In addition to glitter, exfoliating cosmetics, detergents, fabric softeners, fertilisers, plant protection products, toys, medicines, medical devices, etc. will also be affected. The aim is to prevent the release of approximately half a million tonnes of these particles into the environment.
