Indeed, the Gypsy Sport show that took place at NYFW will be the brand’s last, but under this name. Creative director Rio Uribe has decided to start a new phase for his brand.
Designer Rio Uribe’s Gypsy Sport brand, known for overlaying doses of subculture, fashion history and big debates like inequality, returns to the Big Apple to present its 10th anniversary collection at NYFW. The big surprise is that Rio has assured that it will be the last under the name Gypsy Sport.
“This is the last Gypsy Sport show,” said the designer, as he is planning to change the name of the brand. “The word gypsy is sensitive in certain cultures, and since the spirit of the brand is unifying and inclusive, we simply can’t use that word.” Do they have a new name? Not yet, but they are open to suggestions.
In an interview with the LA Times, Uribe explains that he chose the name because of the “aspirational” subculture it represented for him. “I don’t take away from the fact that some people are offended by the word and it’s being used as an insult. I just don’t relate to it anymore. I’m okay with letting it go.”
The Mexican-born Brooklyn native from the LGTBIQ+ community also told Vogue: “The word gypsy is very sensitive in certain cultures, and given that the spirit of the brand is unifying and inclusive, we just can’t have it in our universe”. After 10 years in operation, the brand will return in its 2.0 version.
