Since the birth of Heron Preston in 2016 marked by his collaboration with the New York Department of Sanitation, the big city had not seen the designer’s work on parade. Now, the streets of NYC and its people are the source of inspiration for Heron Preston’s debut runway show at NYFW.
Preston’s FW23 runway show is an ode to the life and community members of the city that has seen him grow up. The usual workwear adds the acronyms HPNY, HPC Security or NYC Censored, referencing acronyms for New York City security departments. Moving beyond its usual tailoring, Preston adds new textures to its lookbook this season with furry boots and heels, ankle-length fur coats and mesh-top pieces. Likewise, accessories take on more importance now in Preston’s work. Matrix-style sunglasses and ski goggles, as well as a plethora of leather motocross gloves complete the looks.
The big city is not his only inspiration; Preston takes sustainability seriously. Underneath the layers of utilitarian, cyber-punk clothing is a commitment to the planet. The fashion show invitation consisted of scraps of trash that Preston himself collected around Chinatown and Brooklyn. This spirit of circularity also continues on the runway. Windbreakers and quilted vests are made from recycled nylon as part of the brand’s EX-Ray sustainable initiative.
If Heron Preston’s(@heronpreston) mission is to create “street” fashion and timeless ideas, he has once again succeeded. The great feat this season is that he has included in its utilitarian imagery a more festive and chic touch. Undoubtedly, it has made the brand more interesting and appealing.
