How red has become fashion’s new colour obsession

How red has become fashion’s new colour obsession

From Pinterest boards to TikTok or Instagram social feeds: stockings, socks, and red, in general, is emerging as the new colour of desire, not only explored by the outsider community, but by all devotees of algorithmic trends.

Showing no signs of slowing down, this 60s revival is now channelled into cherry-coloured tights, crimson long socks or red tights combined with classic Carel Mary Janes merlot and/or patent leather loafers that complete the outfit or the latent uniform of the season.

Whether for the office, the company dinner or the local pub, the ‘OOTDs’ seem to catch fire like wildfire, drawing direct references from the archives of references such as Jane Birkin or customs from Gossip Girl. An aesthetic, stimulus or chromatic expression that has also been transferred to the accessories that dominate the fashion spaces, and which are elevated thanks to Michelle Li, Laura Reilly, Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa or Kylie Jenner. They have also been seen in the Pre-Fall and SS24 collections of Victoria Beckham and Proenza Schouler, as well as in the FW23 collections of Vivienne Westwood, Gucci and POSTER GIRL.

According to the viral Instagram account databutmakeitfashion, searches for the colour “cherry red” have increased by almost 300% this year, to almost no one’s surprise. Many of us have noticed a significant influx of pieces in these shades, which according to Emily McCarthy, Colour Strategist at WGSN, speak of passion, lust and fearless femininity. Concepts with which to energise (or romanticise) our looks with which to become the main character of the ‘coquette’ era.
