Long before nails became Sylvie‘s means of expression, the artist already had an obsession with hands. “They are so expressive, even more so than faces”. After her background in graphic design, 3D model making, and set design, the London-based creative was captivated by the creation of prosthetics; in particular with miniature models that she could extrapolate to the beauty universe. Aiming to enter the fashion system, maintain her creative freedom and create synergies with other women, the nail art universe was her chosen path.
From more minimalist designs to more unusual designs that could be classed as works of art, Macmillan has become one of the most sought after nail artists of the moment. The artist has worked on nails for fashion brands such as Miu Miu, Burberry, Mugler, Prada, Ferragamo, Ottolinger, Off-White™ and more. She has also designed nails for it girls such as Alexa Demie, Rosalia, Bella Hadid and Shygirl. Not that she follows trends, the nail artist amplifies her creative convictions by mixing fantasy and functionality.
Macmillan supports the idea that nails are undervalued in the fashion world, demonstrating that they deserve to be as important as any other step on the catwalk or in editorial. “There is too much repetition in the nail world and that needs to change. Cars, nature, sex toys, history, ceramics? I usually look to outside practices and influences for inspiration.” Her latest collaboration with Arca, her fashion film about pedicures for people with prosthetic limbs and the jewellery collection with Castro Smith, show that Macmillan is ready for 2024.
