How to create your skincare routine according to your needs

It’s 10:00 at night and you’re on your couch at home scrolling through your phone. Whoever sees you might think you’re sending an email, but the reality is that you’ve been watching TikTok for an hour. In those 60 minutes, you’ve probably seen five or six videos of different users who have tried the new viral product, commenting on how it has changed their lives and how they can’t live without it.

You fall into the trap and click on their website, maybe they even have a discount and… smash! Suddenly, you’ve made a payment for a product that, when it arrives, doesn’t give you as much luminosity, nor does it moisturise you as much and, moreover, it gives you pimples and redness. How is this possible? Quite simply, because not everyone has the same skin or the same needs. We tell you what to do to get your skincare routine right.

Listen to your skin

Don’t listen so much to what others say, especially if they are real users and not experts as such, because what works for them doesn’t necessarily work for you. What you do need to listen to is your skin. “If you see too much shine, you might need to do a sebum-regulating treatment. If there are blackheads, an exfoliation won’t hurt. Does your skin redden easily? It’s called hypersensitivity and you should use soothing cosmetics,” explains Daniel Jiménez, cosmetologist and technical director of  Skin Generics and CEO of BeLab Services.

Get expert advice

Even if you listen to your skin, you still can’t understand it? Don’t worry. There are more options. The easiest way is, for example, to go to the websites of your favourite brands. There, instead of going viral, look for products based on what you need. “More and more websites are providing sections where you can find products by concern, for example, to treat lack of radiance, to reduce blemishes, etc.,” adds the expert.

Of course, it’s always a good option to go to a beauty centre or a dermatologist, but you can also find solutions from the comfort of your sofa, as you can even contact the brands you are interested in and get advice by writing to their Instagram or sending them an email.

The most common problems

However, here are some tips to solve the most common issues. If you have “blackheads, pimples and oily skin, the best thing is a routine rich in exfoliating and sebum-regulating acids. For normal skin, you can opt for products rich in ingredients such as salicylic acid, and for sensitive skin, you should opt for gentler alternatives such as lactobionic acid”.

Do you get redness easily? That’s because you have sensitive skin. “Sensitive skin requires us to shy away from formulas rich in active ingredients, such as the above, in favour of those with a balancing and anti-inflammatory function, such as niacinamide. In addition, sensitive skin benefits greatly from moisturising complexes rich in hyaluronic acid,” she adds.

If your concern is already the dreaded signs of ageing, “the best thing to do is to use products that boost skin regeneration and help it produce more collagen. Here, retinol and other ingredients such as vitamin C can certainly help,” says the cosmetologist.

Do you have very dry skin? Then what you need is “to provide moisture to the tissues and replenish the barrier function. Hydration can be achieved with products rich in hyaluronic acid and the skin barrier can be boosted with ingredients such as vitamin F or ceramides,” he says.

Another common concern is blemishes, which “we can try to reverse with regenerating ingredients such as hydroxy acids or, again, retinol. Vitamin C also helps to even out the tone and also inhibits melanin production,” concludes Jiménez.
