If we go back to the 90s, the creator of the so-called Smizing was the well-known Tyra Banks, who always defended that every model should smile not with her mouth, but with her eyes. This make-up technique consists of making you “smile with your eyes”. But who has the time to do the necessary make-up ritual every day? We don’t. That’s why we’re here to tell you about eye contouring and why it’s so essential for your eyes to give a smize to everyone who comes across them. Some people don’t need them, but… is that the case for you?
Daniel Jiménez, cosmetologist and technical director of Skin Generics and CEO of BeLab Services, explains that: “the importance of a specific eye contour treatment lies not so much in the product itself, but in the specific concern of our skin. If it is an area that worries us for whatever reason, we should treat it with a specific product for this area”. It’s not that everyone has to use an eye contour, but if this region is on your list of ‘concerns’ for reasons such as dryness, wrinkles, inflammation or dark skin, you’ll need one.
And why not apply your favourite serum or moisturiser there? Because the skin around the contour is very specific and is not the same as the rest of the face. It is thinner and has different pH levels. Using products that are not specifically formulated for this area can lead either to them being ineffective and wasting product, or to us irritating the area, if we are talking about products that work at a low pH. In addition, these specific products usually add, as an extra, ingredients that are perfect for this specific area, often focused on reinforcing its structure,” adds the expert.
We must be clear about what it is that worries us: whether it is wrinkles or crow’s feet, the darkness of the dark circles, inflammation… and, depending on that, we will go for the treatment that suits us best. “To treat aspects such as inflammation, certain ingredients such as caffeine or green tea can help to reduce it, draining accumulated liquids. These ingredients promote microcirculation and help to reduce congestion. Stimulation of blood microcirculation also helps with dark circles when they are caused by circulatory issues. Ingredients such as vitamin K may also be of interest to you: “it has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. It helps to reduce the inflammation that can increase puffiness.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid promote the plumping effect of expression lines and hydration of the area. “This is important because, as we age, it is normal that this area tends to lose consistency”. Other common ingredients in eye contours are peptides. “These are chains of amino acids that can address issues such as firmness or wrinkles and even radiance. They make the skin produce more collagen and elastin and can have a brightening effect. Finally, antioxidants such as vitamin E and niacinamide should be mentioned. The latter, due to its soothing effect, can reduce inflammation in the contour area and can treat very common issues such as pigmentation.
