If you think there is nothing you can do about the length and volume of your eyelashes, you are wrong, there are numerous methods to grow them naturally, you just have to follow a series of fairly simple tips that include eye massages, proper use of safe and effective serums, a good make-up removal routine before going to sleep, regular brushing or the intake of biotin supplements among others.
The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: catagen (dormant), telogen (shedding stage) and anagen (growth phase). Because of this important cycle, our eyelashes don’t transform overnight no matter how much you apply the best cosmetics on them, this process takes about three months.
The short, fine hairs that make up our eyelashes fall out for various reasons, usually during the telogen stage, due to genetics, stress, hormonal imbalances, ageing… but also due to using outdated or poor quality make-up products, dry eyelids, poor hygiene or rubbing them roughly, as well as following an unhealthy diet or suffering from certain illnesses.
To make them grow in a natural way, Esperanza Sáenz, image manager of the Sevillian firm Nezeni Cosmetics, recommends using serums but always paying attention to their formulation: ‘We must be careful because some active ingredients can cause dryness, itching or irritation of the eyes, as well as blurred vision, darkening of the eyelids or even permanent changes in the colour of the iris, so natural active ingredients are what we recommend the most. Miliacin, a molecule extracted from millet, stimulates the cells that allow eyelashes to grow faster, as well as serums that include hyaluronic acid, for its moisturising and anti-inflammatory effect, apigenin or provitamin B5, which makes them more resistant and prevents breakage’.
Serums for the growth of your eyelashes
The use of serums is quite simple, just apply a drop along the upper lash line with the help of a brush. Two that we specifically recommend for eyelash growth come from Pe Cosmetics and Nezeni Cosmetics. Growth Serum, by Pe Cosmetics: Perfect for the growth of our eyelashes as it makes them thicker, longer and darker, also prolonging their lifespan. Its proteins act as a conditioner and give lashes extra shine.
Tips to grow eyelashes naturally
Supplement your diet with biotin: Also called vitamin H, B7 or B8, it is a compound found in foods such as eggs and spinach. Its deficiency causes body hair to fall out prematurely.
Massage your eyes: Just as you massage your scalp, you can also do the same with the hair on your eyelashes, for one or two minutes twice a day. This type of massage helps to improve blood circulation, which is essential for the follicles to be well nourished and the hairs to grow strong and healthy.
Apply castor, olive and coconut oils: These can be applied with a clean brush that you wash in the morning to condition the lashes. Above all, they are moisturisers, although there is no scientific evidence to support their benefits for eyelash growth. Other recognised moisturisers include petroleum jelly and aloe vera.
Other tips that will help: Remove all eye make-up before going to bed, don’t cut your lashes yourself and brush them regularly, curl them carefully when you have to, use good make-up products and be patient when removing falsies, always do it with a make-up remover or micellar water. If you have semi-permanent extensions, it’s best to go to a professional.
