How to maintain good hair health this season

Taking care of the scalp microbiome is essential for the overall health of our hair. By paying attention to the factors that affect it and taking steps to keep it in balance, we can enjoy a healthy scalp and therefore shiny, elastic and strong hair. If we suffer from dandruff, irritation, dryness or excessive oiliness, it is very likely that we have a damaged microbiome. For healthy, radiant hair, it is not only the right products and treatments that play a role, but also the microbiome of the scalp.

What is the scalp microbiome?

The microbiome is the collection of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi…) that live on our skin and scalp. These microbes are not only normal, but necessary to maintain skin health, as they play a role in protecting against pathogens and regulating the immune system: ‘Having a balanced microbiome is vital to prevent problems such as dandruff, hair loss, seborrhoeic dermatitis or excess oiliness. When this balance is disturbed, either by external factors such as lack of hygiene, poor diet, stress or health conditions, is when these conditions usually appear’ – explains María García, head of customer experience at the Seville-based sulphate-free shampoo company Dalire.

To take care of this microbiome, it is important to opt for products that respect the skin’s natural balance, which we can do by avoiding excessive washing, as it removes natural oils, and taking probiotics that reinforce the health of beneficial microorganisms.

Things to know about the scalp microbiome

  • Indiscriminate use of antibacterial products can damage the microbiome, it is better to opt for gentle products that maintain the balance of our scalp.
  • A healthy microbiome also has an impact on hair growth.
  • A diet rich in nutrients and prebiotics can promote a healthy microbiome not only on the scalp, but throughout the body.
