How to prepare your skin for sun exposure

To achieve a healthy and protected skin with the arrival of good weather, it is essential to follow some basic care that strengthens our tissues so that they are protected and remain strong and healthy. Here are five tips to prepare your skin and keep it healthy throughout the season (and the products to achieve it).

In-cabin cleansing

ne way to prepare your skin for sun exposure is a deep cleansing in the salon. This cleansing treatment removes impurities and dead skin cells, allowing skincare products to better penetrate and protect the skin against UV rays.

In addition, this type of cleansing helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for maintaining youthful and healthy skin. You can already book an appointment at some of the following recommended centres based in Madrid to have a deep cleansing: The Beauty Concept, Clinique La Prairie Madrid, Esseda, The Lab Room.

Cleansing at home

In addition to cleansing in the salon, it is important to cleanse the skin daily at home with products that respect your PH. Deep cleansing at home is also essential to prepare the skin for the application of sunscreen. Experts recommend a double facial cleansing: for this, you need a cleansing milk to remove dirt that is only washed away with oil-based products – make-up or sunscreen – and another cleanser for impurities – dust particles and dead skin cells.

Some products for the first phase: Essential Cleansing by Isdin; TWO POLES make-up removal oil; Clarins ultra-gentle make-up removal milk; Belif Aqua Bomb make-up removal balm; for the second phase: Bioderma micellar water; CeraVe cleansing gel and Cetaphil cleansing lotion.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is also important to remove dead skin cells and prepare your skin for sun exposure. Use a gentle exfoliator to avoid irritation and be sure to moisturise your skin after exfoliation. Exfoliation also helps to stimulate blood circulation and renew the skin, making it look fresher. It also promotes collagen formation, increases radiance, evens skin tone and reduces acne.

It is advisable to have a chemical peel with an acid, whether AHA’s, BHA’s or PHA’s, in serum, tonic or mask format. Here we recommend some of them: Skin Perfecting 2% BHA, by Paula’s Choice; AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner, by COSRX; Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, by The Ordinary; Revitalift Peeling Toner, by L’Oréal Paris; Peeling Calm Enzymatic, by Cristina Galmiche and Lotion 5 Azelaic S, by Gema Herrerías.

Moisturising

Another important aspect of summer skincare is hydration. The sun and salt water can dry out your skin, so it’s important to keep it hydrated. Use an antioxidant-rich moisturiser to protect your skin and prevent dehydration, both in the morning and at night. Also, make sure you drink enough water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Some face creams we recommend are the iconic Ultra Facial by Kiehl’s; Isdinceutics Hyaluronic Moisture Sensitive by ISDIN; Hyaluron-Filler Day SPF 30 by Eucerin; Toleriane Dermallergo Créme by La Roche Posay; Skin Food by Weleda; Magic Cream by Charlotte Tilbury; Resveratrol-Lift Crème Tisane de Nuit by Caudalie; C-Rush Brightening Double Crème by Ole Henriksen; Clarify HL by Neostrata; Hydrance Aqua-Gel by Avène; Sébium Mat Control by Bioderma; Hyper Real SkinCanvas Balm by MAC; Facial Moisturising Lotion by CeraVe.

Sun protection

Finally, don’t forget to use a suitable sunscreen 365 days a year. Sunscreen is the best defence against UV rays and should be applied generously before going out in the sun. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of 50+ and apply it to all exposed areas of your skin. Remember to reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating. And don’t rely on being in the shade to protect you from the sun, as UV rays can penetrate the skin even in the shade.

Some sun creams: Eau Termale Avène; Glow Stick Supergoop; Super City Bock Clinique; Ultra Light Daily UV Defence by Kiehl’s; Crème Fondant Haute Protection Nuxe; Crème Solaire Toucher Sec Clarins; Gel-crème anti-taches antioxydant Bioderma; FotoUltra 50 ISDIN; Eight Hour Cream Elizabeth Arden; Mattifying 3-in-1 Vichy; Anthelios Gel-creme oil control SPF50 La Roche Posay.

This product is ideal for repairing the skin barrier.
