Since its debut in Vienna in 1992, Red Bull has given wings to countless flying cars across 50 countries and 99 cities. This year, the capital of the Turia brought together more than 40,000 spectators who witnessed the flight – or at least an attempt at flight – of the craziest, human-powered gadgets built by teams from all over Spain.
As soon as we entered the venue on Friday, the exhibition of the flying machines and the rehearsal of the choreographies of the participants who came from all corners of Spain predicted a really fun Saturday. The constructions of Papi Gavi, Nil Ojeda y Kapra Diner, El Chiringuito and Los 40 Principales were also set to shine among the 41 teams participating in the competition.
The most ingenious artifacts were thrown down a 9-meter platform, competing to see which one was the most gliding, the most sustainable and the one with the best design, in addition to performing a dance that was part of the show. A jury, very diverse by the way, was in charge of evaluating the different categories to find the winner of the day. Among the members were the Fallera Mayor Laura Mengó, the skater Danny León, the bodybuilder Joan Pradells and the tiktoker Erola Jons. Birdman Dani Román, surfer Natxo González, and aerospace engineer Andrea Emone also helped judge the best flying structure of the day.
Team Chapter, with their Flying Groove, not only achieved the longest gliding distance but also shined in creativity and showmanship, taking the win and a trip to Austria to see Red Bull’s Hangar 7 as a prize. Second place went to La Barbacoa Voladora, who flew 13.7 meters with a performance that had the entire Marina de Valencia dancing to Georgie Dann’s iconic song. And the bronze medal went to Snowparty, which glided a considerable distance but faltered more in creativity and showmanship. The special prize for Sustainability went to the hilarious members of Crazy Goat Garage, the winners of the last edition of Red Bull Autos Locos held in Madrid in 2022.
The day was full of unforgettable moments, such as the live acrobatic paragliding demonstration by Dani Román and the wingsuit exhibition by Horacio Llorens, which flew over the Marina de Valencia early in the day. In addition, Red Bull Dance Your Style provided a magical touch with performances by dancers Sara Trellez, Drian and Miss Izzy. And those who also danced were us with the charanga that accompanied Kapra in his live program inside the enclosure to liven up the event for the various participating teams.
From sharks to dragons and penguins, a bat erected by the media agency PHD and even hamburgers… we have seen everything falling from the top; even a bachelor party, in which the groom was made to jump from the flying machine. In short, a day full of ingenious ideas, and above all the desire to have a good time. With the third Spanish edition of Red Bull Wings Day over, we can only say: See you next time!
