Iris Van Herpen captivates the fashion industry with her Fall 2023 couture collection, inspired by aquatic urbanism and bionic advances.
Entitled “Architectonics”, the collection features artistic creations that look to a future of floating cities and avant-garde design, offering an alternative uniform for those who inhabit both land and sea. Van Herpen’s vision is based on the philosophy of architect and oceanographer Jacques Rougerie, known as the “Architect of the Sea.”
Van Herpen’s designs explore the concept of “aquatic urbanism,” with pieces that convey a sense of fluidity and stylistic levitation. The collection highlights the physiological and structural adaptations of organisms, fusing fashion and floating architecture through innovative couture techniques such as “Biophilic” and “Sensorama.”
“The collection dares to imagine humanity’s next frontier: a world with aquatic urbanism that harmonizes with marine ecosystems,” the Dutch designer explained in the show notes, stressing that “global concern is growing as 90% of the world’s major cities are vulnerable to rising sea levels, and more than 410 million people are predicted to be at risk.”
Iris Van Herpen continues to be a visionary pioneer in the world of couture, preparing humanity for a watery future.
