A year ago, we started a new section to give voice to all those designers and brands that were penetrating the national and international scene. With the aim that all those interesting projects would not get lost in our DMs or in our saved folders, every month we choose 6 emerging brands and give them their space in HIGHXTAR.
Now that we are starting 2024, we have decided to inaugurate the year by highlighting 6 brands that have made utility wear their most recognizable feature. All of them are dedicated to fusing design with technological innovation to create practical and timeless garments. Here is our 6 emerging brands January 2024!
1. _J.L-A.L_
J.L-A.L is a brand focused on continuous development and technological innovation, inspired by nature’s ability to create protection and functionality from simple structures. Its avant-garde design language is based on experimentation and rapid digital iteration, creating forms that are constantly evolving. Working from the process rather than the market, J.L-A.L’s designers consider themselves both drivers and craftsmen.
2. Roy Michael Treur
With little design training and just a few months of DIY experience, the Amsterdam-based designer has captivated a devoted following with his ultra-modern, minimalist aesthetic. His approach draws from futuristic inspiration drawn from the elements of the outdoors and landscapes, creating designs that fuse the scenic with the avant-garde. The uniqueness of his work has led him to form a hallmark in his short but impactful career.
3. GR10K
GR10K weaves unique narratives through unisex shirts, nylon cargo pants and shorts made from recycled materials. Emerging from the unused remnants of a military uniform and workwear factory, GR10K fuses artisanal expertise, technology and aesthetics. The brand seeks to challenge creative canons, and is organized as an anti-dentity collaborative group, moving away from creative subjectivity altogether. Its pieces, from lightweight wool uniforms to technical canvas fabric, incorporate elements such as double-stretch IBQ fabric, compressed foam, steel panels, silver pins or wooden frames.
4. J EONGL I
J EONGL I, originally from Seoul, excels in technical design with a unique approach: an innovative collage of classic garments of the current era. Focused on durability and quality, the brand offers “New-Citywear,” inspired by the coexistence of urban construction and nature in the contemporary city. Jeong Li, the creative mastermind behind J EONGL I, has quickly gained recognition in the industry. His latest Fall/Winter ’23 collection presented at Paris Fashion Week with Impossible Objects has cemented his position as an emerging talent to watch.
5. IZZY DU
Izzy Du, the London-based Chinese-Canadian designer, stands out with her wearer-centric brand IZZY DU /LIFELINE. This line focuses on quality, body-flattering fabrics, integral color schemes and comfort. Characterized by minimal finishes and embellishments, pure prints and meticulous pattern making, each element is consciously chosen. The collection, rooted in fundamentals, seeks to reduce excess and return to the basics of garment construction. With garments of technical construction, IZZY DU /LIFELINE offers options for everyone, regardless of style, age or gender, integrating seamlessly into any closet.
6. JIAN YE
The prodigy SUGENO and his brand Jian Ye redefine excellence in Japanese fashion, consolidating itself as a global benchmark. Jian Ye, with his undeniable talent, has evolved in just a few years to become one of the most fascinating designers on the current scene. His collections defy expectations with the craziest themes, which can be based on things like the GTA San Andreas character, Wu Zi Mu, pigs and even Japanese hunters, as in his latest collection.
