As life is two days, Jun Takahashi invites us to live life to the fullest through his latest Undercover collection. The collection delves into the designer’s youth and musical influences.
“The Specials and Manuel Göttsching created some of the most significant music in my life. This is the premise for this collection, which features the symbolic two-tone ska motif: the checkerboard pattern.
With a pale face and blood-red eyes, the Undercover woman appears as a mysterious and strong being. Wearing long leather gloves, thigh-high boots, she sometimes covers her head with a simple hood, sometimes with a cat-ear balaclava. Feather coats are shown in layers, other times maximised tulle coats appear.
To top it all off, the designer puts a large blanket in a checkerboard pattern on his models. The motif originates from the album cover E2-E4, the masterpiece of ambient music pioneer Manuel Göttsching, with white and brown checkerboards. A tribute that coincides with the ska motif and also celebrates the music of “The Specials”.
In addition to the large checkerboard motif, Jun Takahashi wanted his friend Hiroshi Fujiwara of the Japanese brand FRGMT to include the lyrics to the song by The Specials. Embroidered on the back of the jackets were: “Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think” and “Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink”.
There wasn’t a single garment in Undercover that didn’t remind us of youth, whoever it was. If Jun Takahashi wanted to remember his younger years, we have to say he wishes he had lived in them.
