The European return of Kanye West —or Ye, as he now prefers to be known— is proving far more turbulent than triumphant. What once looked like a long-awaited comeback after years away from the continent’s stages is fast turning into a growing series of cancellations and official pushback. The latest blow comes from Switzerland, where FC Basel cancelled his scheduled stadium performance, adding the country to a list that has effectively shut its doors to the artist.
Poland was among the first to respond forcefully. Cultural authorities labelled the organisation of his concert “unacceptable”, pointing to the country’s historical connection to the Holocaust. The show, set for the Silesia Stadium in front of tens of thousands, was called off amid strong institutional criticism highlighting the line between artistic freedom and the spread of hate speech.
France saw a different but equally telling outcome. Facing political pressure and the threat of an outright ban, the artist himself chose to postpone his Marseille date. A strategic retreat, perhaps, that avoided a formal prohibition but underscored the hostile climate surrounding the tour. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, the response was even more decisive: the government blocked his entry, preventing his appearance at the Wireless Festival in London, which was ultimately cancelled.
At the root of this domino effect lies a series of widely condemned statements and actions. Antisemitic remarks, explicit references to Nazism and controversial commercial decisions have sparked backlash that goes far beyond music. Although Ye has issued public apologies and insists he has changed, several governments maintain that his presence does not align with the public interest.
What happens in Spain?
Against this backdrop, Spain remains a question mark on the European map. The concert scheduled at Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano—his first in the country in two decades—still stands for now, albeit under a cloud of uncertainty. Beyond the controversy, the key question is whether audiences will show up in force, or whether Ye’s comeback will be remembered more for its cancellations than its music.
The UK blocks Kanye West’s entry and the Wireless Festival is cancelled.
