Balenciaga has just released its long-awaited campaign for the Spring/Summer 25 collection, hours after announcing that Demna was leaving the brand to sign for Gucci. Captured by photographer Nadia Lee Cohen, the campaign is inspired by the iconic costume fittings of Hollywood’s golden age, reinventing the classic screen tests.
The choice of Nadia Lee Cohen to direct this campaign is no coincidence. The British photographer and filmmaker is known for her unique cinematic aesthetic, strongly influenced by classic Hollywood cinema, pop culture and surrealism. Her visual style, characterized by meticulous art direction, saturated colors and characters that look like something out of a 50’s and 60’s movie, fits perfectly with Balenciaga’s vision for this campaign. His ability to create images allows him to reinterpret the codes of classic cinema in a very different way to what we’ve been seeing from the maison.
With a monochromatic backdrop, evoking old screen tests, the campaign highlights the power of costumes and scenography in the construction of characters. Through portraits and videos, each cast member is transformed into a cinematic archetype. The narration in the videos mimics the tone and pacing of archival screen tests.
Among the campaign’s stars are actors Kyle MacLachlan, Linda Honeyman, Sunnyi Melles, Mark Eydelshteyn, Rachel Sennott, Zhou You and Georgia Ford; artist Coumba Samba; and models Sun, Raiki, Queen and Leona. Each embodies an iconic character from the world of classic cinema, including The Socialite, The Femme Fatale, The Artist, The Diva, The Girl Next Door, The Villain, The Reporter, The Prodigy, The Main Character and The Boy Next Door. Linda Honeyman is featured playing herself.
In addition to the portraits, the campaign includes still life images highlighting essential pieces from the collection, such as the Laurel Classic Polo and new versions of the iconic Rodeo Bag in shades of mineral green, grey and almond. Key footwear models are also featured, including Balenciaga Basketball Sneakers and heels and clogs in collaboration with Scholl.
