Following the filing of his 26 million dollar lawsuit against Supreme, Tyshawn Jones, a key figure in skateboarding history and the face of the brand since he was 11, revealed that he received 1 million dollars a year — 83,333.33 dollars per month — for exclusively wearing Supreme apparel. This contract reflects the scope of agreements between athletes and streetwear brands. Jones was associated with the brand for 13 years.
The lawsuit claims that Supreme terminated the agreement unilaterally to cut costs ahead of its recent sale. It also accuses the brand of damaging Jones’ reputation through the spread of false rumours. Supreme, in its defence, asserts that Jones breached his exclusivity by taking part in a photoshoot for Marc Jacobs. Jones counters that the brand had previously approved similar collaborations, making the termination a pretext.
Tyshawn Jones’ case with Supreme highlights the challenges and complexity of relationships between brands and athletes. It also shows how commercial decisions can impact the reputation and career of key figures within skateboarding and streetwear.
