Levi’s® Vintage Clothing returns to the past to recover one of the garments most closely linked to Albert Einstein: the Levi’s® Menlo Cossack leather jacket. The piece accompanied the physicist for years and now reappears as a limited edition that unites scientific culture with classic American workwear.

Einstein, renowned for his enormous contribution to science, also stood out for his minimalist style. He preferred simplicity, avoided wearing socks, sought comfort, and his unruly hair required little care. His way of dressing followed this same logic. In 1935, shortly after arriving in the United States and while applying for citizenship, he acquired a Menlo Cossack jacket that soon became his everyday outerwear.

Decades later, on 13 July 2016, Levi Strauss & Co. recovered the original garment after winning the bid at Christie’s auction house in London. There it was noted that the jacket still retained the soft scent of Einstein’s pipe tobacco. Today, the piece forms part of the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives in San Francisco.

A faithful reproduction of the original

The new LVC Levi’s® Menlo Cossack preserves all the features of the classic design. It includes the rounded collar, distinctive cuffs, its short, boxy cut, and brass buckles with adjustable side straps. To highlight its historical value, each jacket is presented in exclusive packaging that includes a replica of bidding paddle No. 97 —the same one used at Christie’s— and a photograph of Einstein wearing it. Each unit is also hand-numbered on the label, reinforcing its limited-edition status.

Recreating Einstein’s leather jacket is not just about reproducing a garment; it is about preserving a piece of history that connects Levi’s with one of the brightest minds in humanity,” says Paul O’Neill, Design Director of Levi’s® Vintage Clothing.

The LVC Einstein Jacket, priced at 1,200 euros, is now available on Levi.com and in selected Levi’s® stores.
