There’s news that smells like freshly baked croissants on Fifth Avenue. Lily Collins will step into the shoes of Audrey Hepburn in a film about the making of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the 1961 classic that made Holly Golightly an eternal icon. And no, it’s not a remake, it’s the story of everything that happened behind the scenes.
The project is based on the book Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman by Sam Wasson, which explores everything that happened before and during the filming of the movie. Collins, in addition to starring in the film, will also serve as a producer and has shared that she has been developing this story for almost ten years, driven by her admiration for Hepburn.
The screenplay will be written by Alena Smith, creator of Dickinson, while the director has yet to be confirmed.
Capote, Monroe and a little drama at Tiffany’s
The original film, adapted from Truman Capote’s novella, almost had a different leading lady. The author wanted Marilyn Monroe to play Holly Golightly and felt that the studio had ‘betrayed’ him by choosing Hepburn. This conflict will be one of the main plots of the film, which will also show what happened behind the scenes during filming.
Key figures such as director Blake Edwards and legendary costume designer Edith Head will also appear. And yes, they will also recount the scare that occurred while filming the famous opening scene in front of Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue, when a member of the crew was nearly electrocuted.
Now the question is not whether the star of Emily in Paris will be able to rise to the occasion—the challenge is enormous—but how she will reinterpret one of cinema’s most elegant and magnetic figures. For now, the combination of fashion, Hollywood history and creative drama has us completely hooked. And yes, breakfast at Tiffany’s is served once again.
