The meeting celebrates two decades of one of the most iconic collaborations in fashion history.
This new chapter not only recalls the impact of the original collaboration, but reimagines and updates it through more than 200 pieces that honour their legacy and project a contemporary vision of their artistic collision.
Since the first creative fusion between the Maison and the Japanese artist 20 years ago, the bond has transcended fashion, bringing traditional arts closer to global pop culture. Louis Vuitton x Murakami is a tribute to this defining moment in the 21st century collecting movement, uniting the Maison‘s spirit of innovation and savoir-faire with Murakami‘s colourful and playful imagery. The result is a collection that marries the best of traditional craftsmanship and the latest technologies, with a focus on the precision and visual dynamism that characterise the creative.
Murakami, born in Tokyo in the 1960s, is renowned for his ability to blend the traditional with the modern, exploring everything from Japan‘s most classical arts to anime and comic book culture. His unique style, which has shaped an iconography all its own, was first captured in collaboration with Marc Jacobs, then creative director of Louis Vuitton. Among the most iconic early products that defined this union were the kaleidoscopic reinterpretations of the Monogram which, in this reissue, find new forms of expression.
The Louis Vuitton x Murakami collection celebrates this historic collaboration with a new selection of garments and accessories including bags such as the Keepall, the Speedy, the Dauphine and the OnTheGo, adorned with the irreverent and vibrant motifs of the Japanese artist. The famous multi-coloured colour palette, with flowers intertwined with the LV logo, shines more brightly than ever thanks to technological innovations in printing and manufacturing, allowing for even more precise definition of the motifs.
In addition, there is an impressive array of products, from iconic City Bags to silk scarves, sunglasses and perfumes, all transformed by Murakami‘s unmistakable creativity. Highlights include the Keepall bag with the Monogram Multicolore pattern in 33 bright shades, the Superflat Panda that appears on trainers, key rings and skateboards, and the delicate Cherry Blossom that adorns Papillon bags and a series of platform sandals.
One of the most notable additions is the LV Hands, a playful reinterpretation of the logo that is presented on bags such as the Alma BB and on a silk carré. These designs not only celebrate the artist’s unique aesthetic, but also maintain the perfect balance between modernity and tradition that has always characterised Louis Vuitton.
To celebrate this anniversary, Louis Vuitton has created an immersive experience in its shop windows and ephemeral shops, complemented by innovative installations that highlight the art and aesthetics of the collaboration. Zendaya, ambassador of the Maison, stars in the campaign with fun images captured by the photography duo Inèz & Vinoodh, reflecting the energy and creative spirit of this unique partnership.
Louis Vuitton x Murakami is scheduled to launch on 1 January 2025, with a second chapter arriving in March, focusing on Murakami‘s iconic cherry blossom pattern, perfect for the spring season.
