U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has confirmed that she will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Bondi called the crime an “act of political violence” and a “premeditated, cold-blooded murder,” highlighting the brutality of the attack.
“After a thorough analysis, I have instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case, aligning ourselves with President Trump’s agenda of curbing violent crime and making America safer,” the prosecutor stated.
For his part, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has filed additional charges against Mangione, including two counts of second-degree murder, along with several counts of forgery and illegal weapons possession. At 26, Mangione could face up to 20 years in prison for first-degree murder, and up to 15 years for second-degree murder.
