Like any reggaetonero, Maluma (baby) has a penchant for bling bling, and the other day at the Grammy Awards he proved it again. For the most important music awards, he wore a million-dollar watch by Jacob & Co., one of the most excessive brands on the watchmaking scene, which adorns boxer Floyd Mayweather, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rihanna and other global celebrities. It was, as far as we know, the most lavish watch at the gala.
Papi Juancho, as Maluma has been known lately, matched his black Dolce & Gabbana dinner jacket with The Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette Rose Gold Ruby model, which competed in brilliance with his diamond-studded earrings and tooth caps and his larger-than-life ring. Because discretion has no place at a ceremony like the Grammy Awards.
The watch, in pink gold, is one of the versions in the Astronomia collection by Jacob & Co., the company he founded and which is presided over by Jacob Arabo, whose designs are as original as they are prohibitively expensive. Since it is also a jewellery house, it usually sets many gems in its watches, as in this case, which has 257 rubies on the back of the dial and 80 baguette-cut white diamonds on the lugs.
As well as being striking and large (it measures 50 mm in diameter and 25 mm thick), the watch is complicated: it has a mechanism with four arms carrying a triple-axis tourbillon, a magnesium globe hand-painted in blue with the continents in pink gold that rotates for 60 seconds, a one-carat 288-facet diamond and an openworked dial with hours and minutes. The whole completes a rotation around the centre of the watch in 20 minutes, and is protected by a domed sapphire crystal.
No, the Colombian did not pick up a Grammy, even though he was competing for the award for Best Latin Pop Album with Don Juan, but he was still the centre of attention. And that’s what it’s all about.
