Man arrested for attempting to export fake work by Leonardo da Vinci

The National Police have arrested a man in Madrid who was trying to move a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci out of Spain. According to an official statement, the work was intercepted at the border post of Modane, France, by French police authorities. The painting, which was valued at 1,300,000 euros, was seized when it was discovered that the export permit presented was invalid.

The story dates back to June 2022, when the detainee attempted to take the work out of Spain to Milan, using an export permit issued by the Ministry of Culture. However, the document had been expired for several months. The Spanish authorities, alerted by the French customs service, launched an investigation that culminated in the declaration of the export as illegal.

This case highlights the growing vigilance surrounding art trafficking in Europe, especially when it involves pieces of incalculable historical value. The swift intervention of the authorities prevented the work, allegedly linked to one of the most iconic artists of the Renaissance, from leaving Spain illegally.

‘Infinite Accumulation’ marks a milestone in the work of the artist Yayoi Kusama.
