The Australian national acquired seven trainers for $18,965 through a deal with a teenager.
Among the models included in the transaction are the exclusive Dior x Air Jordan 1 and the colourways ‘Bred’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Royal’, among others. The suspicion of fraud began when the buyer began to find certain defects on the surface of the sneakers and decided to go to a specialised shop in Melbourne to check their authenticity. The surprise came when the employee confirmed that he had indeed been the victim of a scam and warned him that the teenager who sold them to him is “a fraudster and a blacklisted scammer”.
Despite the seller’s father offering compensation amounting to almost $7,000, the case was taken to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), where it was determined that the seller was a minor at the time of the exchange and is now responsible for providing compensation under the legislation.
“If the agreement had been entered into when the seller was 18 years old, the outcome would have been different,” said VCAT member Katherine Metcalf in dismissing the case.
