The openly bisexual artist is facing accusations of queer baiting following the release of her new album “MEGAN”, sparking debate online. The accusation that Megan Thee Stallion has used queer baiting refers to the perception that the artist has made use of elements associated with the LGBTQIA+ community to appeal to that audience without necessarily providing authentic or meaningful representation in her music or public image.
“Embracing bisexuality for the sake of appealing to your LGBT fanbase while never dating women is so weird to me,” one fan shared in a now-deleted tweet. “Doja [Cat] and Nicki Minaj did it too.” However, Megan’s fans know that she has always been open about her sexuality. In a 2022 interview on ‘Caresha Please’, she talked about bisexuality: “Girls are so sexy. Girl-on-girl sex can last two days”. Also, in ‘Captain Hook’ she sings: “I’m messaging a bi girl, we’re both freaky, just trying things out”.
Megan is not the first to be accused of queer baiting. Cardi B shared a tweet in 2021 arguing: “I don’t like this new word ‘queer baiting’. I feel like there is pressure on artists to talk about their sexuality. If an artist kisses a girl in a video, does that mean she has to show videos and messages with other women?”. In 2023, Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny faced similar accusations about his aesthetic in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, saying, “You do it because you want to and it makes you feel good”.
Queer baiting is criticised because it is seen as a form of exploitation of the LGBTQIA+ community, as it appears to be progressive, but is simply a ploy to hook queer audiences. In the case of Bad Bunny, currently a member of the Kar-Jenner Kendall Jenner clan, he has never been photographed with any members of the collective, which makes the public question his aesthetic intentions. But on the other hand, who are we to question the sexuality or aesthetics of others?
