Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated R-rated film starring a dozen Robert Pattinsons, arrived in theatres with high expectations for its release. Although it managed to position itself as number one at the US box office, the debut came in below expectations, with a modest $19.1 million gross from 3,807 theatres, or more than 17 million euros.
Despite leading the rankings, Mickey 17 is still far from breaking even, especially considering that Warner Bros. invested $118 million in this risky, darkly comedic and unique space odyssey. The film received a ‘B’ on CinemaScore and a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Adding to the production costs, the marketing campaign required another $80 million, meaning the film needs to gross between $275 million and $300 million worldwide to be considered a success. So far, it has made $25.4 million in 66 international markets. In its South Korean premiere last weekend, the film took in $34.2 million, bringing its global total to $53.3 million.
In addition to topping the box office, Mickey 17 made history by becoming the first film by a Korean director to reach the number one spot in the US market. Overall, this weekend’s box office experienced a 60% drop compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World bid farewell to its lead, dropping to second place after three weeks at the top. The film, which stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, amassed $177 million domestically and $370.8 million worldwide. We will have to see how Mickey 17’s performance evolves in the coming weeks.
