Mochakk, the emerging phenomenon of Brazilian electronica, has just taken a momentous step in his career with the release of his first EP, From The Stars, on cult UK label Ninja Tune. This two-track work is a piece of sonic goldsmithing that interweaves the richness of Brazilian music with the sonic complexities that define the UK’s electronic avant-garde. With this work, the producer not only reaffirms his position as one of the most innovative forces on the global scene, but also marks a milestone in the legacy of a label that has always been synonymous with artistic excellence and audacity.
‘It’s crazy to release a record on Ninja,’ says Mochakk, also known as Pedro Maia. ‘It’s one of those moments that marks a before and after, a full-blown validation. It’s a label with so much history and so much musical culture that has given space to artists I’ve admired for years. It is an indescribable honour to be part of that narrative’. With humility and at the same time a clear sense of triumph, the Brazilian producer expresses his satisfaction at the selection of two very different tracks for this EP. ‘I love that they chose two such different tracks, it’s an emotional journey in itself,’ he adds.
The first track, From The Stars, opens with an enveloping mix of vibrant female vocals and a reinterpretation of The Rah Band’s legendary Messages From The Stars. The fusion of its house base, disco influences and echoes of the 80s creates a soundscape that, without nostalgia, exudes a timeless freshness, marrying the energy of the past with the excitement of the present. It is a shining example of how electronic music can be reconfigured to speak to a global audience, without losing sight of its soul.
In contrast, Maria, the EP’s second track, had already generated a wave of anticipation following its debut on Mochakk’s Cercle set in 2023. Minimalist in character, yet deeply sensual, the piece dives into a sea of hypnotic synths, slowly building layers and a tension that builds as the track progresses. The essence of the UK is felt through its textures and pulses, but its magnetism is universal, like a whisper that resonates in every corner of the world.
Mochakk has transcended the borders of Brazil, becoming one of the most relevant figures in world electronic music. With his presence on renowned stages such as Circoloco in Ibiza and iconic festivals such as Coachella, Time Warp and Primavera Sound, his growth has been meteoric. His Mochakk Calling events, which sold out in cities such as Miami, São Paulo, London, Lisbon and New York, are testament to the connection he has established with an international audience. In addition, his acclaimed performance for Cercle in Seville’s Plaza de España, which garnered almost 4 million views, and his collaboration with Disclosure in a b2b set at the Cercle Festival in France, further cement his status as a global trendsetter.
With more than 160 shows in 29 countries and his recent addition as a DC-10 resident, Mochakk’s 2023 was a defining year. His single Jealous, released on Circoloco Records, solidified his position as one of the most important innovators in contemporary electronic music. From The Stars is just the next chapter in a career that never ceases to amaze, with a future that promises to be as bright as the stars that inspire his music.
‘Full time papi’ is the first single from Guitarricadelafuente’s new album to be released in 2025.
