MTV VMA 2023: Only female artists nominated for Artist of the Year

For the first time only women are nominated for Artist of the Year at the MTV VMA’s 2023.

The pay gap, the presence of women in management positions in the sector, the visibility of female artists or the pressure they are under because of their physique or the styles they work in are some of the most common complaints within the music industry. For this reason, each milestone has a particularly relevant meaning. In this sense, it is worth mentioning the nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 in which women have made a full house in the Artist of the Year category.

Created in 1984, the awards honour the best of the music industry on an annual basis, with a particular focus on the field of music videos. Over the years, they have become a must-see event in the industry and popular culture calendar, leaving performances to remember. It is not a novelty that the awards are often strongly committed to recognising female talent: the artists with the most nominations for the awards are three women (Beyoncé, Madonna and Lady Gaga).

For the first time since the awards organisation introduced the Artist of the Year category, all of the nominees for the category are women: Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj, Shakira and Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. The pop diva received seven nominations for the music video for “Anti-Hero” and one in the artist of the year category, followed by SZA, who has six.

The milestone is close to being reached in the top category, Video of the Year. In this category, the nominees are: ‘Attention’ by Doja Cat, ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus, ‘Super Freaky Girl’ by Nicki Minaj, ‘vampire’ by Olivia Rodrigo, ‘Kill Bill’ by SZA, ‘Anti-Hero’ by Taylor Swift and ‘Unholy’ by Kim Petras and Sam Smith. It is the latter video, by Petras and Smith (who became, respectively, the first transgender and non-binary artists to reach number one on the US charts).
