Netflix to release documentary exploring women’s role in hip-hop

A celebration that highlights the importance of the female figure in the rise of the genre, starring Queen Latifah, Latto, Saweetie and Coi Leray, among others.

Through four episodes, ‘LADIES FIRST: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop’ recontextualises the irrepressible women of the genre and the important role they have played in the 50-year history of the cultural movement. In addition, important industry figures such as record label executives, stylists and trade journalists are featured.

As the synopsis of the documentary states, “the story of the music that changed the world is contextualised in the broad social, racial and political landscape of the time and, most importantly, through a female lens”.

‘LADIES FIRST: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop’ is coming to Netflix on 9 August. In the meantime, you can take a look at the official trailer:
