Maurizio Cattelan, the provocative Italian conceptual artist, has established himself as an iconic figure in the contemporary art world, known for his works that challenge conventions and question the boundaries of what is considered art. In 2019, his name went viral when he presented at Art Basel Miami a piece that was as simple as it was controversial: Comedian, a banana taped to the wall. This work, which ironically synthesised the ephemeral and commercial nature of art, became a viral phenomenon and a symbol of pop culture, embodying the duality between the banal and the conceptual.
In an obvious reference to that disruptive, minimalist aesthetic, NOCTA, the collaboration between Nike and Drake, has released its latest version of the Nike NOCTA Hot Step 2 in a yellow colourway, dubbed ‘Opta Yellow’. Interestingly, the campaign for this silhouette pays direct homage to Cattelan’s Comedian, replicating the same iconic action: the shoe was displayed attached to the wall with tape, highlighting the connection between street culture and contemporary art.
The Nike NOCTA Hot Step 2 had already been launched in previous versions in colours such as ‘Total Orange’, ‘Eggplant’ and ‘White’, but the ‘Opta Yellow’ version stands out both for its bright tone and the boldness of its presentation. This strategy not only underlines the cultural relevance of footwear in today’s landscape, but also plays with the irony of turning an everyday object like a trainer into an artistic icon.
The release of the Nike NOCTA Hot Step 2 ‘Opta Yellow’ is now available through NOCTA’s official website.
